How to install security bars in your windows. Since they are generally out of sight of neighbors or hidden behind bushes, the basement windows are an easy spot for thieves to enter. Replacing the standard window glass with unbreakable polycarbonate (Plexiglas), cutting bushes and having strong closures on the windows will help prevent entries. However, the best way to prevent a theft is to install security bars (bars) in the windows of your basement.
- Consider how you want your security bars to look. You can buy security bars on request or opt for adjustable grills available in your hardware store or home store.
- Determine where you want to locate your security bars. You want to be able to open your windows, therefore, if your basement windows open inwards, locate the bars between the frame and the window. If your window slides you could put the bars inside the window and still be able to open it.
- Measure the opening of your window and purchase the appropriate sized safety bars or bars. Locate the safety bars in the window opening and mark where the adjusting screws will go. Drills holes in the window frame for the installation of the bars.
- Install the security bars. Use long screws to make sure the screws go through the entire window frame (not just the cover).
